Presented here are scale 1:1200 (1”=100’) & 1:1250 (1”=104’) miniature metal waterline models of the warships of the world’s navies of WWI, WWII and modern day.

All are precision metal castings, finely and accurately detailed down to 20mm & 40mm mounts, deck hatching, cranes, catapults, etc. These are improved versions of the models use for recognition training of lookouts & pilots in WWII. You can view all of our lines here.

The 1:1250 scale models, Neptun (WWII), Navis (WWI), Saratoga (Misc.) Argos (Modern)) come to you completely assembled and beautifully hand-painted and are acknowledged to be the finest made.

The 1:1200 scale models Superior (WWI, WWII), have excellent detail, come in kit form and are more durable and offer a lower price alternative.If you have an interest in the sea and the operational and design histories of the great ships and their weaponry of the 20th & 21st centuries, then you’ll want to get started on your fleet right away whether your objective is collecting or being a wargame admiral.

Scotland’s River Clyde will always be associated with shipbuilding, from Henry Bell’s COMET of 1812 through the boom & bust times, and two world wars, to the decimated industry that it is today.

The adjective "Clydebuilt" implied that a vessel was built to the highest standard of it’s day, and, it is only fitting that that title should be reserved for the real ships that earned that reputation. Clydeside models are kits; they are not restricted to replicas of ships built on the Clyde, and indeed, many of the kits are assembled by collectors and model makers far from Scotland! Nevertheless, it is hoped, that in some small way, the name CLYDESIDE commemorates, and pays homage to what was once the greatest shipbuilding river in the world.

Kit_waterline_modelsAll model kits and accessories are in 1/1200 scale, (100 feet to the inch), and are cast in white metal alloy, with some accessories in photo-etched brass. With the exception of the smallest models, each kit is supplied with scale brass rod for masts, etc., and full assembly instructions. The highly detailed kits offer the model maker the opportunity to assemble, super- detail, and paint them to a high display standard, but are also robust enough for the rigours of wargaming. Apart from light craft, each model will represent a particular ship, but, as very few ships within a particular class were identical, the kit will allow the model maker to customise the model to a specific ship within that class. If, in a class, a ship is significantly different from her sisters, a separate model will be produced.

Like many "baby-boomers" I was captivated by the plastic construction kits of the early 1960’s. I started with large kits by Airfix, Renwall, Aurora, Revell, Frog, etc., etc.. When I discovered the Eaglewall waterline kits, I was hooked - and not just because of financial & space restrictions!

I rediscovered my boyhood collection, (in an old shirt box!), when I was an art student, and renovating these small models seemed like a good foil to painting on big canvases! By the time I started teaching, I had graduated from repairing the models to converting and scratch-building. I started to get requests for ship models from collectors and wargamers, who had seen my work, and I started looking for ways to mould and produce models from my masters. From early crude resin castings, I was able to sub-contract production casting to a model figure manufacturer, until I was able to purchase my own casting machinery in the mid 1980’s.

Clydeside models were first produced in 1978, as simple, one-piece, wargame models and the range rapidly expanded to over 200 models, including WWI, WWII & modern warships, and 37 Clyde steamers. The early models were cheap and cheerful to produce, but the many undercuts resulted in short mould life and lots of (constant) extra work remaking new production moulds. This slowed down production of new models and hindered the process of advancing the quality of the models. It was decided to stop production of all the original models and reinvent the range in the form of more detailed, multi-piece kits, allowing scope for super-detailing and customising to any particular ship in a class, as, rarely were two sisters identical. At the same time, the models would continue to be robust enough for the rigours of war gaming.

Future additions will therefore be new multi-piece kits, made from new masters, replacing the one-piece castings, plus models of ships that were never in the old ranges. As before, many of the new models will be as a result of customer "requests".

For the tabletop miniature wargamer we carry ship models from the Fantasy Fleets Reptilian, Undead, Human, or Steam range of model warships, approximately 1:1200 scale.

For the WWII miniature wargamers, we have the simplest WWII rules set ever written, WWII Wargaming for Young and Old.

For boardgamers, we have (new) Corregidor scenarios "Siege of the Rock" and "Retaking of the Rock" made for the WWII board game "Memoir '44" from Days of Wonder (tm).

Who We Are
Magister Militum was founded in 2002 by Richard and Zoë Clewer. Our company manufactures and imports of some of the finest wargaming figures, scenery and accessories money can buy, with over 14,700 products on our website. We truly are Giants in a Land of Miniatures!

Who Does What?
Richard has a degree in War Studies and a lifelong passion for history of almost all eras matched by an enthusiasm for wargaming and board games to be reckoned with. He researches new ranges, makes the moulds, answers historical enquiries and is half of our double act at trade shows.

We have two fantastic spin doctors, a packaging princess and Zoë spends her time mainly maintaining and improving our website, including photography of newly painted figures - a never ending job!!

Where Are We Based?
We’re based in two industrial units near Salisbury in south west England. This is where we run the manufacturing and mail order part of the business, although you can see our ranges ‘in the flesh’ on the show circuit throughout the UK and parts of Europe. Our History
Magister Militum came into being in 2002, when we began by importing Hallmark Figures 1:6000 ships back into the UK from their new owners in the USA. We soon progressed to manufacturing with the purchase of Navigator Miniatures 28mm ancient ranges and shortly afterwards bought the Chariot Miniatures 15mm range which spans the Biblical era to the Napoleonic Wars and has been in business for over 30 years.

It was during this time that we began producing 10mm Crimean War figures of our own. After a chance conversation with Rick Priestly at a Society of Ancients day, we began a rapid expansion of our fledgling 10mm Ancients range in collaboration with Games Workshop Warmaster Ancients team. This huge range of 10mm figures includes the Medieval era, a massive Napoleonic and Revolutionary Wars range, WW1 and WW2 figures and indeed our scale model dinosaurs.

Next came an expansion into the world of buildings and scenery with JR Miniatures, Baueda and Miniature World Maker from the USA, Italy and Australia respectively.

With GHQ we knew this was a range that couldn’t be beaten on quality or detail, so we had to make this excellent range easily available to you on this side of the Atlantic. We stock over 10,000 packs with deliveries on average every six weeks or so, so you’re never far away from 1:285 heaven.

Latterly, we have begun stocking pleasantly challenging strategy board games, card games and other useful items like bases, paint and brushes and unusual dice. Not to mention our growing range of 10mm fantasy ranges!
