Napoleonics 6mm

Adler Miniatures began sometimes around 1983 though the idea had germinated a little earlier.

At the time the only Napoleonic figures in 6mm scale were those made by Heroics & Ros Nice figures but for the life of me I couldn't paint the little devils. A fact made worse by several people at the club who could paint them beautifully!

I was at the time running and designing for Mikes Models so I started to experiment with designing figures in 6mm scale. I soon realised that the H&R figures were as they were because they derived from the WW2 infantry they did. These were very wee skinny fellas because the vehicles at that time were a bit 'squashed ', at the time moulding / casting technology was in its infancy and there was a lot more shrinkage so the vehicles lost a lot of height from top to bottom. Not I hasten to add a problem that H&R stuff suffers from the these days the vehicles casting and moulding are top notch.

So when I started using GHQ Models ranges for WW2 I noticed how much bigger they were than the standard and that they had gone to 1./285 rather than 1/300th. For some reason ( nice easy steps I imagine like 25mm, 15mm etc. none of which numbers actually describe the height of the figures) 1/300th/285 became known as 5mm scale, it never was such a number but it did catch on. The actual height of a 1.285 scale figure is 6.4 from base of feet to eye level.

This way of measuring figures rather then trying to measure to the top of the head shrouded in headgear started around this time and has since become pretty standard. All part of the scale creep so designers can make better proportion figures, the difference say from 15 to 18mm doesn't sound much but for a designer its like the difference between designing a small apartment rather than designing a 4 bedroom semi detached house.

So when I looked again I realised that as the figures I wanted to make didn't have to fit in with vehicles, I could bulk them out a little so as make them easier to paint. When I did the WW2 ranges I had to reverse the process!

Adler was born then and over the mid 80's I started the business full time and here we are nearly 30 years later.

And in case anyone wonders the name Adler was chosen because at the time there were a couple of Eagle miniature firms in existence and being half German it seemed obvious to choose the German equivalent of eagle instead.

So many plans for the future but getting the design time is always the problem, being a designer led outfit means that I do pretty much everything. At some point I plan to off load the production side of things so as to leave more time for doing the important bit.

I have just started doing ancients in 10mm, considered them in 6mm for a long time but 10mm allows far more room for the character that is such a necessary part of the ancient period. Its a nice scale has the the advantages of both 6mm and 15mm and few of the disadvantages. Having got past the learning curve stage hope to accelerate the production of the 10mm line.

Fear not however the Napoleonic remain a core part of the business and additions and remakes are constantly in the works.

Well hoped you managed to stay awake till the end........er..hum.....wakey wakey!

Long Business Description

Baccus 6mm Ltd specialises in the design and production of wargames figures and accessories in the 6mm scale. Although it is often overlooked by the dominance of the 15mm and 28mm scales. The smaller figures offer huge advantages in terms of flexibility, prices and ease of painting. It often comes as a pleasant surprise to our new customers that they find 6mm figures easier and quicker to paint than their coarser-scale brethren.

6mm figures can be used to create small forces for those short of space and resources. But are at their best when used in the grand projects where large number of miniatures can be used in a small space to create a mass effect.

To those unfamiliar with Baccus figures the general perception of 6mm is of poor quality design. Little attention to detail and a general 'blobby' appearance. We take the attitude that small size should be no barrier to quality. And take great pride in the sculpting and design of our products. Special care goes into the General and Personality figures in the range. If you think it would be impossible to spot historical personalities in 6mm scale figures then its perhaps time you gave us a second look.

This web site is far more than just a catalogue of our ranges. There is information on how to paint miniatures, uniform details, a bulletin board and lots of pictures and background information.

IF you've never considered 6mm scale figures before, then it's worth spending some time at this site. If you have seen other 6mm before and dismissed them, then it is still worth a look - until you have seen Baccus 6mm, you've not really seen 6mm!

Grumbler Miniatures is a new range of excellent 6mm Wargaming miniatures. Starting with Napoleonic British and French for the 100 days. The final retail miniatures will be in white metal I hope you like them.

My name is Alan, I have been an avid wargamer since a young lad. I started shopping in Hammersmith Games Workshop in the early eighties, before 40k and Warhammer (showing my age lol).

like all of you I have a varied range of miniatures and I always get attracted to something new. I have always wanted to offer my own selection of miniatures and after recent events i thought it was time to have a go. So Grumbler Miniatures was born.

My sculptor has done an amazing job with my 6mm Napoleonic and ACW ranges. I have had to learn how to mould and cast white miniatures to deliver this range. But I'm not going to stop at these two periods, I want to offer a varied and exciting range of 6mm miniatures.

Heroics and Ros Figures manufacture wargames figures in 1/300th scale (6mm) in all periods from ancient warriors to modern tanks.
Founded in 1973 the company has sold millions of these tiny models all over the world.

Even though the scale is very small (a foot figure is 6mm or 1/4 inch tall) the detail is perfectly clear and precisely molded. With normal care the metal is very durable.

Ideally suited for large scale battle dioramas, they form exhibits in a number of museums. The military vehicles are accurate. Several armies use them en masse for effective visual displays of enemy organisations and formations; and individually for highly for highly successful training courses in military vehicle recognition.

The figurines are used in large numbers by wargames and wargame clubs. Unlike larger scale figurines they make the best use of table space, and a 2 metre by 1.5 metre table (6 feet by 4 feet) will allow big battles to be simulated, or the area will allow smaller formations ample space for preliminary scouting, wide, sweeping maneuvers, or artillery duels.

Surprisingly easy to paint they can be quickly finished in basic colours to create forces rapidly, or they can be carefully detailed and will reward hour of labour. The metal (which contains lead) will take enamel paints, acrylics, oils or alkyds.

We have always held that 1/300th scale was the ideal scale for wargaming, and our experience over the last quarter century has not changed our mind.

They are small and take up little space when not in use; they are very inexpensive - a first army can be built for the value of a few coins; they cover most periods and new models are always being added; skilled or unskilled, anyone can paint them for good effect; and when the forces are on the table, battle lines are drawn, maneuvers underway, they reassemble the real thing far more closely than any other scale can.
