A Brief Hornby Hobbies History
Hornby Hobbies’ journey began back in 1901 in Liverpool. When founder Frank Hornby applied for a patent in 1901 to protect an invention he called Improvements in. Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People’. This became Meccano, and in 1964, Hornby and Meccano bought by a rival company, Tri-ang. Hornby Railways became independent again in the 1980s. And has continued it's legacy as one of the most iconic companies in Britain.
The Beating Heart of Margate
Hornby has been a famous fixture in Margate, Kent, since 1964 when Tri-ang acquired the company. The impressive Hornby factory site at Margate constructed by Lines Brothers Limited in 1953 as a purpose built. State of the art model production facility for Rovex Scale Models Ltd and their world famous Tri-ang Railway system. The new factory housed the technical, experimental and development departments of the company. In addition to a limited manufacturing capacity for their brand of Tri-ang model railways.
Hornby Hobbies’ Most Iconic Brands
Hornby is a household name and is famous as the UK brand leader in the model railway hobby. The company’s founder was Frank Hornby. (1863 - 1936) who applied for a patent in 1901 to protect an invention he called. ‘Improvements in Toy or Educational Devices for Children and Young People’. Nobody then could have imagined how this product would influence the model railway hobby that we know today. Frank Hornby, granted his patent and soon put the invention into production under the name ‘Mechanics Made Easy’.
Now simply called "Hornby", the company justifiably retains the position it has held for more than 50 years. As Britain’s leading model railway manufacturer.

In November 2006, the Humbrol and Airfix brands were acquired Hornby Hobbies Ltd. Where they sit alongside some of Britain’s best-loved toy and hobby brands.

Hornets Nest Miniatures first endeavor is a rather extensive line of 10mm resin cabins - one story, two story brick and clapboard houses, a church, mill and schoolhouse. Many of our castings are based on period artwork or actual structures existing on battlefields. They are be perfect for games set in the French and Indian War, the American Revolution, and the Civil War.
I have been involved with wargaming in one form or another for the better part of my 42 years on this planet. My father is a retired Army Officer, and from the time I was old enough to walk we have been traipsing around battlefields, or visiting some out of the way hobby shop in search of tiny lead soldiers.
My style or technique is a blend of the old and new. I use a three up shading system made popular by painters such as Steve Dean, or Kevin Dallimore, but I use washes and inks as well. I feel like this softens the shading a bit and gives the miniatures a tone that is less bright than if I just slapped on the paint strait from the pot.
I'm lucky enough to make my living as a creative director for a design firm, but it's my love of miniature world building that keeps me painting and collecting. I have two amazing son's, one of which seems to have been bitten by the wargaming bug.
I-94 Enterprises manufacture, sell and distribute our lines of wargaming miniatures storage boxes – the Panzer-Keeper, Mothball and Footlocker – as well as the Beacon Publications line of ‘Decal Details’, which we acquired in early ’02. As of Sept 2012, we are the owners and manufacturers of the Raiden line of 1/285 aircraft. We are also distributors of Scotia-Grendel (Scotia) lines of historical miniatures, but we only stock some of the 1/300 ‘Collectair’ line of aircraft.
We are also distributors and retailers of the well received ‘Check Your 6!’ aircraft miniatures rules, stocking the books, stands, magnets, etc. As of May 1, 2010, we’ve also purchased the line of 6/10/15 mm wargaming buildings and terrain features from George Nafziger – the Les Batiment line – which also contains the 6mm offerings formerly from Vac-U-Cast. Our own products, the Rolling Plains Terrain line of 6 and 15mm items will be online shortly also. Between the terrain lines, we have about 400 items available. We are also now offering an in house painting service, see the ‘Painters’ tab for more details.
We publish scenario books in support of the CY6 system – trade terms are available.
Direct customer sales as well as trade accounts are welcome. We offer generous dealer and distributor terms and invite your inquiry.
Established in 1985, we try to make your hard earned, not to be squandered gaming bucks go farther.

Little Big Men Studios produce thousands of different transfer sheets for you to choose from in 28mm, 20mm, 15mm and 10mm sizes. I cover periods from Ancient to Medieval to Napoleonic covering shields and flags.
The work I do is extremely detailed and combines history and artistry in miniature. The range is expanding all the time with new designs appearing nearly every week. Sometimes I do forget to put transfer images on the website so if you know I make something for a manufacturer but can’t find it please let me know.
My name is Stephen Hales and I own ‘Little Big Men Studios’. The company was started in April of 2004 initially as a painting service. The transfers were created to help me with my painting commissions, but as time went by the transfers took up more and more of my time and became my main business. The painting commission side of LBMS is no more as I simply don’t have the time to paint due to the great success of the transfers.
Before LBMS I was a film and computer animator, but have been interested in History and war-gaming since I was seven years old. Finally becoming disillusioned with others controlling my creativity I decided to start LBMS. This has been the best decision I could have made as it has given me the chance to be my own boss and to be creative within my favourite subject matter, which is history. It gives me great pride to receive messages from satisfied customers who have really enjoyed using the transfers over the years and I must thank a lot of my regular customers for making this a very pleasant job.
The range is so large now I have lost count, but must run into the thousands! in 28mm, 15mm, 10mm and 1/72nd scales. My design time has become less due to the pressures and time constraints of sorting customer and trade orders. So the designs I do are for the more popular periods and ranges rather than the more esoteric.
I work closely with Victrix limited working on the design of the plastic figure ranges. I produce a very large range of transfers for Victrix but they are only sold via the Victrix Website.
