Myth Supplement

“Myth Supplement” is a Greek and Roman mythology fantasy supplement for the “Warband” skirmish rules. All of the basic rules apply unless there is an exception overriding it.

Greek mythology seems largely based upon traditions from the Aegean bronze age. In theory troop types would based upon Mycenaean and Minoans, centaurs should anatomically normal humans riding horses and the Golden Fleece used to pan for gold dust in streams. This is the fantasy version, where heroes and their retinue are hoplites. Monsters and gods resemble the images of classical Greece.

Roman mythology heavily influenced by Greek and Etruscan religion.

People often see the early imperial Roman army as the most characteristic. By that time, the Romans only fought civil wars in Italy. Most institutions could traced back to the republic. Republican military practice was remembered. I prefer either a manipular Roman Army (DBM “Camillian” and “Polybian” armies), or a hoplite Roman army for “Myth”.

Myth Supplement Additional Rules

  • Hoplites: usually top rate infantry – combat factor 6
  • Velites: Peltasts and Caetrati: javelin skirmishers with close combat factor 3
  • Pila armed troops: get +2 when a line (one or 2 deep) first round only of close combat
  • Triarri, Princeps and Roman Class 1 Hoplites: top rate infantry – combat factor 6
  • Hastati and Roman Class 2 and 3 Spearmen: average infantry – combat factor 4
  • Heroes: as leaders in all respects but may or may not be actual leader – combat factor 8
  • Centaurs: cavalry who don’t dismount (heavy cavalry if armoured, light if not).
  • Skeletons: average infantry, combat factor 4. If fighting humans or animals who have no hero or god with them, skeletons get +2 as well.
  • Harpies: move 16 inches but can not end in water, bog or difficult going. Combat factor 8
  • Minotaur: move as infantry – combat factor 10
  • Hydra: moves 3 inches any terrain – for combat treat as group of 4 creatures with combat factor 8. Can not pushed back, so a failed push back can not kill. One “kill” result kills it.
