Pax Romana Rules, designed to represent small scale actions on the frontier of the Roman Empire in the late 4th or early 5th Century. Its intended to be simple and fun – any relationship to historical reality is purely co-incidental. The original inspiration for these rules Chosen Men, from which many of the mechanisms came from.
Figures are individually based; each represents about 10 men. The game works best with infantry units of between 6 and 12 strong, and cavalry units about 4 to 8 strong. Better quality units should normally be smaller than the rest. Veteran units can be very powerful under these rules, especially if armoured or bow-armed. Use sparingly unless you want them to dominate the game.
Apart from the figures, players will need an ordinary pack of playing cards, and some method of indicating wounded figures.
A typical game, involving about 50 – 60 figures on each side, will last about two to three hours. A pre-planned scenario, with unequal sides and specific victory conditions (such as a raid on a convoy, or a punitive expedition) will usually give a better game than a straight stand-up fight.
The key features of Pax Romana Rules system are:
- Fast play: Simple and contained on two A4 sheets that contains all the references you will need
- Flexible: PAX ROMANA uses generic classifications and weapons to allow its use for the entire Roman period
