Castle Perilous (2024)

Precis Intermedia brings back this vintage fantasy roleplaying game (originally published in 1980).

Journey into your imagination. Become a gallant knight slaying a fire-breathing dragon! Become a samurai warrior defending a fallen comrade! Play a game in which shield maidens, fearsome magicians, stout dwarves, tall elves, and fearless halflings wend their way through YOUR adventures. Learn to interpret the Omens of Doom! Search through misty forests to find the treasures of ages while battling fearsome grey wolves and changelings! Explore dark underground caverns and rummage through their deserted temples for weapons of magic! Recreate the worlds of your favorite heroes or create your own! May your path lead to fortune!

Castle Perilous provides all you need to play an adventure which ends only when you wish it (apart from three six-sided dice). The magic system is very different from that in other games, the weapons system is streamlined, and the orientation is to heroic adventure and dungeon exploring.

Features:
10 character types for variety in envisioning adventuring roles
Consistent level-based bonuses for certain dice rolls like “to hit” and damage
Streamlined combat system using 3D6 rolls and “to hit” brackets
Unique magic system in which the players’ participation in the process affects the odds of success
2 adventure scenarios
Table of random numbers for when dice are not available
This piece of gaming history is a must for collectors and old-school gamers. With the original virtually impossible to find, this classic reprint of Castle Perilous was created using Precis Intermedia’s new advanced scan-to-layout system. Rather than being a series of touched-up scanned pages, the content has been converted to text and made to look like the original. There will be some differences from the original, such as corrected typos and layout issues. Put simply, this book behaves like something created with modern desktop publishing software for a clean print, yet looks very much like the original, and is readily available at a low cost.
