Boilers and Breechloaders 5th Edition! Some 18 years ago, B&B became one of TVAG’s first publications and remains an constant seller. As the only comprehensive set of miniatures rules for the subject, it allows Colonial Wargamers to integrate their traditional Imperial and Native armies in an amphibious environment for battles from the Nile to the Irawaddy, to the Yangtze, to the Congo. With the increasing selection of miniature naval weapons and ship fittings from the Houston Collection, as well as those still offered by Reviresco/Tin Soldier, it has never become easier to scratch build gunboats and native craft in addition to commercial models in resin and cardstock.
And the rules themselves continue to evolve, so a 5th Edition became necessary, and to mark the occasion the rule book is now offered with a full color interior, three pages of “inspirational” photos of models and games being played, plus other new illustrations throughout, and a new cover. Better, there are now rules covering fire on buildings, from thatch, to brick, all the way to major earthworks, and how to rate those structures for fire effects.
The new 5th Edition has expanded to 72 pages of rules and Ship Logs for all three Hull Types, and Native Craft. Rules for Torpedoes, Rockets, and all manner of Cannon, Machine Guns, and “Pom-pom’s” are still provided, and new weapons have been added, too!
Another change has helped to hold the price on the rules themselves. The original full color card stock Action Cards, Weather Vane, Wind Speed markers, Torpedo and Mine markers are now offered as PDF files for FREE upon request, and delivered via E-mail with no postage charge.
B&B 5th is now even more than before the complete game for Riverine and Coastal actions in amphibious operations and between Gunboats and Native Craft in the Age of Imperialism. Fully integrated with The Sword and The Flame and the Campaign Game, The Sun Never Sets (TSNS), the game allows for 25mm or 15mm Gunboat models to fight each other, side-by-side with your with miniatures land games.
All in all, B&B the 5th represents the continued evolution of a rules system that has grown with the times. And, amazingly still, only the price has never had to evolve, and remains at $25.00, plus postage.
