Polly Oliver Castings

Polly Oliver Castings characterful American War of Independence range is available in a variety of unit packs. Soon we will have expansion and speciality packs available and a range of fantastic flags.

The very popular Polly Oliver Castings range were originally produced in the nineties but the original company closed in December 1999. The figures have been sadly missing from the wargame market place for some thirteen years but, following our complete purchase of the range, we are pleased to return them to their rightful place in the forefront of characterful 15mm wargame figures.

The range is now owned and operated by Wiltcourt Ltd. who produce the figures in their own Devon workshop. The figures are available via this website and at wargames shows all over the country via our good friends at Colonel Bills They will also be available in limited numbers at selected retail outlets (TBC).

Who is Polly Oliver

So, who is Polly Oliver? Polly gets her name from that traditionally given to young girls that ran away from home to find their brothers or, more usually, their betrothed who had joined the army. These young girls would cut their hair and disguise themselves as boys to join the ranks, often becoming successful, and only discovered when they became injured or killed. The name, Polly Oliver, was cemented into British lore through folksongs and several versions can be found today; we like this one….

As pretty Polly Oliver lay musing in bed, A comical fancy came into her head: “Nor father nor mother shall make me false prove; I’ll ‘list for a soldier and follow my love.”

The drums they did beat and the trumpets did blow When Polly, in uniform, to the war she did go; Her lover was wounded and fell by her side And, as Polly lifted him, she knew that he had died.

Poor Polly sat crying, dead soldiers all around, When up came the captain, who said as he frowned: “A soldier here weeping, a soldier afraid?” “Oh, Sir! I’m no soldier,” said Polly, “I’m a maid.”

“A maid?” said the captain, “Then throw her in jail.” “Oh, no!” pleaded Polly, who told her sad tale; And, when a great vict’ry had ended the strife, The captain took Polly and made her his wife.
